Pulling out the love of dance in people is what inspires me. I love bringing out talents and abilities in people that they never thought they had. In a sense I love watching people discover a different side of themselves through dance. That's what happened to me one night in San Francisco. I discovered a side of myself that I didn't know existed and I haven't looked back since. If anything my passion has only grown.
As I was running to the store one night, I heard music coming out of a little restaurant called Nickie's BBQ. Lured by the enigmatic sounds, I went in and the next thing I knew I was dancing my heart out and didn't stop for the next few hours. I had never been a dancer. Never taken a dance class. I didn't even know that I had rhythm. Talk about a discovery! At the end of the night someone said to me, "Little girl you need to take a dance class!" The next day I immediately enrolled in an Afro-Haitian dance class which then led me to different types of African dances and before I knew it I stumbled upon a dance class given by ex-memers of the famous Brazilian revue Oba Oba. That was the beginning. Within a few months I was performing with them and toured England and Scotland.
The love affair continued. I performed all over the Bay Area for 7 years.
During my last semester of college I went to Paris, France on vacation and little did I know what was in store for me. I took a dance class and was offered a job in a company but sadly had to turn it down. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. Alas I returned to San Francisco. I was working more and more and dancing less and less. After two years I sold everything and took off to Paris to live out my dream. I just kept telling myself I'd find the company and take the job I had passed up just to do at least one show. Upon arrival I found out that the company who offered me the job no longer existed. I didn't speak French and didn't have legal working papers. But there was no way I could just turn around and go home. With determination, diligence and the grace of God, within a few months I found work and went on tour to Gabon (Africa) and then to Morocco... twice!
The love affair continued. I performed in various cities and countries throughout Europe.
Once back in Paris I got my working papers and danced in dinner shows on the Champs Elysees and did countless gala events. My 7-year dance career in France included touring throughout Europe, the Caribbean appearing on several European television shows, a music video, a movie as well as being featured on the cover of Nova Magazine. All of this because I discovered a different side of myself through dancing... one night... in San Francisco.
